The food at the ledger is amazing from the brunch to dinner service. So good that we ended up here 4/4 days we were visiting back in October. They had the coolest and most delicious holiday drinks. The music made it a whole other vibe. And the decor is so appealing. I hate that it took me so long to make this review but I want to give a big shout out to our waitress Maggie. She made our trip in Salem one to remember. She was so warm and wonderful. Can't wait to come back on our next trip!
Been here for brunch and dinner twice, and the main appeal honestly is the rustic chic ambiance of the space with high ceilings, tall windows, brick walls, and grand light fixtures with some of the bank's old (1818!) original charm. It's in the upper tier of nicer restaurants for the area and they use high quality ingredients. Service is friendly, but sometimes slow depending on the server. It's in the downtown area, so parking is tricky, but they provide a parking map (link at the bottom.of their page), which I found helpful. Most recently had a nice holiday dinner with a friend and we enjoyed the popovers, beets, mushroom pasta, duck breast and sticky toffee pudding. As everyone else has mentioned, the popovers are one of the best things on the menu, get them! They are huge, airy, and taste great with the butter and drippings. Beets were good, but would skip. The mushroom pasta had a nice creamy but not overpowering flavor - pasta was a bit too al dente but still tasty. The smoked duck was perfectly cooked, but I didn't care for the frisee salad much. Sticky toffee pudding was a decadent way to end the meal. If you're looking for a nice meal in a nice space in the North Shore, Ledger is a great pick.
In a town with many fantastic options to choose from, Ledger stands above them all. We live near Salem and receive requests from friends all the time for restaurant recommendations. Ledger tops our list, EVERY TIME! The ambiance really takes the cake here - there is a huge, gorgeous bar, and many options for romantic seating. Their menu is really interesting and features a lot of local ingredients. You must trust me and order the popovers (they arguably might be the best thing on their menu - wow are they good). Their cocktails are outstanding as well! I am always very impressed by their service and how upscale it feels inside. Be sure to make a reservation in advance, as they can get very busy!
Managed to come back even though it's seven years later and the place is still hopping. They serve the most delicate yet strong, cocktails, well worth the price. Had to have the popovers once again, which were to die for. I had the duck breast this time and it was exquisitely perfect. If you were able to snag a reservation here, you have to try this excellent restaurant at least once. The inside is incredibly beautiful. The aesthetics of the entire restaurant is an architectural dream.
Came for drinks stayed for dinner. The drinks were great and the garnishes were adorable and on theme for Halloween. Had the Duck for dinner and ran into an issue with my first plate having room temperature Duck and cold potatoes. The bartender was very nice and immediately fixed the situations. The staff was professional and efficient. If you don't have reservations you will be able to sit at the bar or communal table. So if you have small children or a large group plan to have a reservation but if you don't mind sitting at the bar it is really a great.
This is a gem in Salem. It is located inside an old saving bank which makes for a beautiful ambiance. We started out with the Dinner Popovers. These are HUGE and very tasty. They were piping hot, doughy and soft in the middle while served with beef drippings and pumpkin butter. This was delectable. For our entrees we ordered the Skirt Steak and the Salmon. These were some of the best seasoned dishes that we have ever had. It is not always the case at restaurants where things seem to be under seasoned. These had great flavor and were very well composed plates. My steak was served with crispy potatoes, carrots and an onion purée. The salmon was served grilled and topped with pepitas with some spring vegetables and bok choy. Our dessert was the only item that was just ok. It was a pumpkin Swiss roll that tasted generic and like it could be from a supermarket. But overall we LOVED our meal here and would definitely dine here again when in Salem.
This was really an amazing place for brunch in Salem. I expected jacked up prices, but it was pretty reasonable, especially considering the level of professional service and high quality food. The bar is huge and absolutely beautiful. Reservations were mandatory, but the bar was walk-in, which had plenty of seats (by luck?) on a Sunday in Salem in October! My Benedict was the best I've ever had. The breakfast potatoes are orgasmic. My friend's burger was delicious! I will definitely go back next time I am in town.
Wow. I thought this was going to be a tourist trap because it was smack dab by the Haunted Happenings Market, but it absolutely was not. All the food we got was delicious. The restaurant is an old bank, so it was a cool atmosphere as well.
Brunch Review: They only do brunch on Sunday mornings, but it's worth the trip. Ledger resides inside of an old bank, in which they've preserved some elements of the old bank and weaved them into their space. We sat on the right side of the restaurant where the dividing wall was made of deposit boxes. Overall the food was fantastic, portions were large, and the service was on point. What we ate: - Daily Donut: These are a must, if you enjoy sounds of the special variety of the day, order one! You won't be disappointed. - Chicken & Waffles: Simply amazing! The chicken was cooked to crispy juicy perfection. - Side of Potatoes: Not all dishes come with these so we ordered them as a side. They're great breakfast potatoes, but nothing special about these - Sweet Potato Hash: This was the only dish that fell just a bit flat. I would've expected a bit more kale and punch from the peppers as they were sweeter than expected.
Oh my god I wish I lived here so I could eat at this restaurant more frequently. Everything was exceptional, so thoroughly thought out and balanced. Incredible handmade details making for an obscenely delicious meal. The popovers are so good it's almost obscene. Think croissants but even better. Paired with the beef drippings and honey garlic butter and you've got a dance of flaky bread exterior, soft interior, and flavor contrasts galore. SO good. Also tried the duck French onion and the squash bisque. So unique and layered with flavors! For more main energy, tried the special of the lamb and pork sausage which was exceptional. Perfectly cooked and really bright flavors. Also had the stuffed roasted peppers which had so much to enjoy. For dessert, my husband got the pear cake and he loved it. I got the matcha chocolate dome and I was floored. It had exceptional taste and textural elements. Drinks and service were excellent too! Honestly, this is one of the BEST restaurants I've been to in a very long time. Its menu is creative, well thought-out, and seriously high quality. Prices were really fair for the care that goes into the food.
